Anxiety doesn’t have to control your life

At Kells Psychology, our specialized therapists help you understand your anxiety and develop practical skills to manage worry, fear, and panic. We’re here to support your journey towards feeling more calm and confident.

We offer in-person services to clients throughout the greater Edmonton area, including Leduc, Beaumont, Nisku, Devon, Sherwood Park and more. We also provide virtual counselling Alberta-wide through telehealth.

Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety is more than just feeling stressed or worried. It’s when fear and worry become so strong that they interfere with your daily life, relationships, work, or school. While everyone feels anxious sometimes, anxiety can be a problem when it involves persistent, overwhelming feelings that don’t go away easily.

Common Signs of Anxiety

Physical:

  • Racing heart or pounding chest
  • Shortness of breath or feeling like you can’t catch your breath
  • Tense muscles, headaches, or body aches
  • Stomach problems or nausea
  • Sweating, trembling, or feeling shaky
  • Trouble sleeping or staying asleep
  • Feeling tired all the time

Mental and Emotional:

  • Constant worry that’s hard to control
  • Racing thoughts or mind going blank
  • Feeling on edge or restless
  • Irritability or mood swings
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Fear of losing control or something bad happening
  • Feeling detached or disconnected

Behavioural:

  • Avoiding places, people, or situations that make you anxious
  • Difficulty making decisions
  • Seeking constant reassurance from others
  • Checking or repeating behaviours
  • Trouble starting or finishing tasks

Types of Anxiety We Treat

You Don’t Need a Diagnosis to Get Help

Many people we work with don’t have an official anxiety diagnosis. If you’re struggling with worry, fear, or anxious feelings that are affecting your daily life, relationships, or wellbeing, you deserve support.

We also provide support for:

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Persistent worry about everyday things like health, work, family, or money that feels impossible to control.

Panic Disorder

Sudden, intense episodes of fear (panic attacks) that can include chest pain, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, and feeling like you’re losing control.

Social Anxiety

Intense fear of social situations, being judged by others, or embarrassing yourself in front of people.

Specific Phobias

Strong, overwhelming fears of specific things or situations like flying, heights, animals, medical procedures, or driving.

Health Anxiety

Excessive worry about having or developing a serious illness, often involving frequent checking or doctor visits.

Separation Anxiety

Extreme worry about being apart from loved ones, often affecting children but can also impact adults.

Performance Anxiety

Fear of performing in front of others, whether in work presentations, sports, or creative activities.

Our Approach

At Kells Psychology in Edmonton, we understand that anxiety affects everyone differently. Our therapists use proven approaches tailored to your specific needs and experiences.

Some of the Evidence-Based Treatments We Offer:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – Learn to identify and change thought patterns that fuel anxiety. CBT helps you challenge unhelpful thoughts and develop healthier ways of thinking about anxiety-producing situations.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – Learn to accept anxious thoughts and feelings rather than fighting them, while taking actions that align with your values and goals.

Mindfulness-Based Approaches – Develop skills to stay present and manage anxious thoughts through mindfulness and grounding techniques.

Relaxation and Breathing Techniques – Master practical tools to calm your nervous system and reduce physical anxiety symptoms.

Somatic Approaches – Address how anxiety shows up in your body through body-centered techniques that release tension and promote calm.

          Frequently Asked Questions

How long does therapy for anxiety take?

This varies by person and the severity of your anxiety. Some people see improvement in 8-12 sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. Your therapist will discuss a timeline based on your specific situation.

Do I need medication for anxiety?

Not everyone with anxiety needs medication. Many people find relief through therapy alone. For some people, best results are achieved through a combination of medication and therapy. You can talk to a psychiatrist or your doctor to explore whether medication would be helpful for you.

Can therapy help with panic attacks?

Absolutely. Therapy is typically very effective for panic attacks. You’ll learn what triggers them, techniques to manage them when they happen, and skills to prevent them from controlling your life.

Is it normal to feel anxious about starting therapy?

Very normal. Many people feel nervous about their first session. Your therapist understands this and will help you feel comfortable from the start.

Will my anxiety ever go away completely?

While some anxiety is a normal part of life, therapy can dramatically reduce symptoms and give you skills to manage anxiety so it no longer interferes with your life. Many people find their anxiety becomes much more manageable with therapy.
