Autism Spectrum Disorder Assessments
Comprehensive, compassionate evaluation services – Coming early 2026
Beginning early 2026, Kells Psychology will offer specialized Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) assessments for children, youth, and adults using the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) and the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2).
Our comprehensive assessments provide families and individuals with the clarity, understanding, and support needed to access appropriate services and resources. Most assessments are conducted in-person at our South Edmonton office, but may be available virtually. Contact us to learn more.
How Is Autism Assessed?
We use gold-standard assessment tools to provide comprehensive autism evaluations.
Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R)
The ADI-R is a comprehensive, structured interview conducted with parents or caregivers. It explores developmental history and current behaviours across key areas affected by autism, giving you detailed insight into an individual’s developmental trajectory.
Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2)
The ADOS-2 is a semi-structured, interactive assessment that allows our psychologists to directly observe social interaction, communication, play, and imagination. Through carefully designed activities and social scenarios, the ADOS-2 provides valuable information about how autism may present in real-time interactions. It can be completed with toddlers as young as 12 months all the way up through adulthood.
Together, the ADI-R and ADOS-2 create a comprehensive diagnostic picture, combining caregiver perspectives with direct observation to inform accurate diagnosis and meaningful recommendations.
What to Expect
Our assessment process is designed to be thorough yet supportive:
- If not recently completed, an IQ test will first be administered to contextualize the ADI-R and ADOS-2 results (typically 1 to 2 hours)
- In-depth parent/caregiver interview using the ADI-R (typically 2-3 hours)
- Direct observation and interaction using the ADOS-2
- Review of developmental history and current functioning
- Exploration of social interaction, communication, and behavioural patterns
- Integration with other assessment tools as needed (e.g., academic or adaptive testing)
- Comprehensive written report with recommendations
- Feedback session to discuss findings and next steps

Who Can Benefit
Our assessments are appropriate for:
- Children, adolescents, and adults with suspected autism
- Individuals seeking clarity about their autism diagnosis
- Families needing documentation for accessing supports and services
- Those who have received conflicting information about autism
- Anyone seeking a comprehensive understanding of their strengths and needs
