      Frequently Asked Questions

What happens in a family counselling session?

Family counselling typically involves meeting with a trained therapist who helps guide the conversation in a respectful, supportive way. Everyone has a chance to speak and be heard. The focus is on improving communication, resolving conflict, and building understanding.

      Who should attend the session?

That depends on your family’s needs. Sometimes the whole family attends, while in other cases, sessions may include just certain members (e.g., parents and children, or co-parents). Your therapist will work with you to decide what makes the most sense.

Do we need to have a big problem to go to family counselling?

Not at all. Many families come to therapy for general support, to strengthen their relationships, or to learn tools to manage everyday challenges. You don’t have to wait for a crisis, early support can be very effective.

Is what we share in family therapy confidential?

Yes. Family counselling is confidential, within the limits of the law. Your therapist will explain how confidentiality works when multiple family members are involved and will discuss any exceptions (such as safety concerns).

      Will the therapist take sides?

No. Our therapists are trained to remain neutral and supportive of the entire family. Their role is to create a safe environment where everyone feels heard and understood.

Can we combine family counselling with individual therapy?

Yes, many clients find it helpful to have both family and individual support. However, it’s important to note that the same therapist typically cannot provide both individual therapy and family counselling, as it may create a conflict of interest. If individual therapy is recommended, we can help you connect with another trusted therapist at our clinic to ensure everyone receives the care they need.
